Nana Obeng Opoku Tanor II (Chief of Kwahu Borukuwa) is said to have indicated that, he is ready to make lands available for the establishment of the Donkorkrom campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development.
This was made known by the District Chief Executive of the Kwahu Afram Plains North District, Hon. Isaac Ofori Koree on March 20, 2023, after a delegation led by Prof. Eric Nyarko Sampson (Vice Chancellor – University of Environment and Sustainable Development) visited the Borukuwa Chief.
The delegation included Hon. Isaac Ofori Koree (DCE – Kwahu Afram Plains North), Hon. Isaac Agyapong (DCE – Kwahu East) and Prof Eric Nyarko Sampson among, Mrs Mary Abena Agyapong (Registrar – UESD), Mr. Baffour Awuah Kwabi (Director of Finance – UESD) others.
In his address, Nana Obeng Opoku Tanor II praised the University authorities for the progress made so far in acquiring land to expand the University.
He promised to lead the delegation on a tour to the allocated land and other key facilities in the Donkorkrom community and assured to raise the necessary lands to actualize the establishment University.
The people of Kwahu Afram Plains North, led Hon. Betty Krosby Mensah (Member of Parliament – Kwahu Afram Plains North Constituency) had earlier demonstrated against the decision of the Nana Addo led administration to change the establishment of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development from Donkorkrom to Bunsu.
Hon. Isaac Ofori Koree however indicated that, his checks after resuming office as DCE showed that, there wasn’t any as such and they are yet to secure a land for the establishment of the University.
He believes the establishment of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development would go a long way to bring development to the Eastern Region and Donkorkrom, to facilitate teaching and learning for potential students of the area.
ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY
The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) is established by the Eight Hundred and Ninety-Eighth Act (Act 898) of the Parliament of Ghana, entitled University of Environment and Sustainable Development Act, 2015.
The Act, which provides for the establishment of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development and to provide for related matters, was assented on October 26, 2015.
AIMS OF THE UNIVERSITY
According to Act 898, the University is aimed at providing higher education, disseminate knowledge related to development and agro-business education, undertake research and foster relationships with person’s outside the institution in accordance with some principles as stipulated in the Act.
CAMPUSES OF THE UNIVERSITY
Session 3 of the Act indicated that, the University shall be established in Somanya with campuses in Donkorkrom and any other place as the council may determine.
The University is currently having campuses at Somanya, as work continuous steadily for the establishment of the Donkorkrom campus.
