After the reading of the 2026 Budget Statement on the floor of Parliament yesterday, our team is reviewing the budget, with focus on Kwahu Afram Plains North and South Districts. Whiles at it, we have employed Google Gemini (Artificial Intelligence), to help us deduce what the budget has for us. Below, is what we got.
1. Projects and Funding for the Kwahu Afram Plains Area
The Budget Statement highlights two key areas of development focused on the Afram Plains enclave:
a. Adawso-Ekye Amanfrom Bridge and related road networks
This project is part of the Government’s “Big Push Infrastructure Programme”. The 2026 Budget allocates an amount of GH¢30.0 billion for the entire Big Push Infrastructure Programme, which includes this strategic bridge and other strategic roads.
b. Afram Plains Economic Enclave Irrigation
Large-scale irrigation is progressing across 3,220 hectares using sprinklers, pivots, and canals. As of the end of September 2025, the progress at various sites was reported as: Atonsu (59% of 600 ha), Ekye-Amanfrom (59% of 350 ha), Konadu (75% of 1,470 ha), and Ahinasi-Pitiku (20% of 200 ha)
2. Benefits of the Projects to the People
The projects are primarily aimed at unlocking the economic and agricultural potential of the Afram Plains enclave.
a. Adawso-Ekye Amanfrom Bridge:
The bridge and its related road networks are expected to open the Afram Plains to large-scale commercial agricultural. This is considered “urgently required to unlock the agricultural and economic potential of the Afram Plains enclave”.
It addresses a major cause of food inflation by improving roads that link food-producing enclaves to markets, which will improve connectivity for the people.
b. Afram Plains Economic Enclave (Irrigation):
The ongoing large-scale irrigation is developing land for the cultivation of cereals and vegetables. This is intended to boost local food production, provide food security, and improve livelihoods for farmers in the Districts.
Our team will continue to review and follow events after the budget statement and inform the general public, especially citizens of Kwahu Afram Plains North and South Districts, of what we stand to gain.
